DMS Students Win at Math 24 Competition

Twelve 5th grade students competed in the Math 24 competition in Waunakee on January 28, 2010.  DeForest did very well at the competition, earning two trophies.  Twelve 6th graders also competed in the Math 24 competition held at Poynette on February 16, 2010.  De Forest earned four of the six trophies at the tournament.

During the competition students in fifth grade had to make four numbers on a card total 24 by adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing each number once.  The sixth grade cards had two wheels, each with three numbers and one number “missing.”  They had to first find a “variable number” which, when used with the other numbers, would make 24 on both wheels.  According to 5th grade teacher and Math 24 advisor Tracy Biodrowksi, the game improves skills such concentration, mental math, number sense, problem solving, and pattern finding.
