The DeForest Area Community & Senior Center, Wisconsin Association of Senior Centers, and Coalition of Wisconsin Aging Groups sponsors an essay contest for 6th grade students in honor of Older Americans Month, held in May each year.
212 sixth-grade students at DeForest Area Middle School wrote a 300-word (or less) essay on “My Grandparents” or “My Best Older Friend.” They were judged by several volunteers from the DeForest Area Community & Senior Center on the strong attachment between old and young, originality and cohesion, sixth-grade level work, and grammar and spelling. Winning essays are then submitted to the statewide contest.
On May 7, the two local winners were announced and awarded a certificate of achievement and $50 savings bond. The winners also read their essays aloud at the event. The older adult, whom they wrote about in their essay, were present, unknown to students.
The May 7 awards ceremony and reception is hosted by the DeForest Area Community & Senior Center and LINK-ages, a community/school service organization which promotes and recognizes intergenerational activities in the area.
