On April 7 several DeForest high school and middle school students attended the 22nd annual German Day at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. They were among 600 students from across Wisconsin who competed in contests involving Poetry Reading, Spelling, Music, and Skits, as well as presenting Posters and Videotapes, all which will be judged by faculty, staff, and students of German at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
DeForest Area Middle School students competed in several events including: Music Competition, Spelling, Poetry, Poster, and Skit. The group of students took 5th place among the middle schools.
DeForest Area High School students competed in: Video, Spelling II, Spelling Adv., Poetry Level II, Poetry Adv., Music, and Poster.
The event is sponsored each year by the Department of German and the Department of Curriculum & Instruction at UW-Madison.
German Day is one of many activities that the Department of German puts on in its ongoing commitment to working with schools in their efforts to improve the teaching of German in Wisconsin. This year’s motto was Hebt das O-A-CH! which literally means “raise the roof!” but it is also a play on words, since the German word for “roof” (“Dach”) is composed of the international abbreviations for Germany (D), Austria (A), and Switzerland (CH) where German is spoken.
