The Waunakee and DeForest High School Student Councils are teaming up for a fundraiser to support the fight against Juvenile Diabetes. On Friday, January 6 the students are hosting Pack the Gym Night at DeForest Area High School. The boys and the girls varsity basketball teams from each school will be playing on the same night. The boys’ game begins at 6:00 pm, with the girls’ game following at 7:45 pm. Students from both schools will also be selling t-shirts for the event, along with other fundraising activities.
Students are asking local businesses in DeForest to pledge money for every point scored by the DeForest boys varsity basketball team during the game. Waunakee businesses will be doing the same for their team. According to the student council president, “all donations will go to JDRF, and the names of business sponsors will be displayed during the game on a banner in the gym.”
In a letter going out to local businesses, student council members cited some facts about Type 1 Diabetes from the JDRF website, stating that “As many as three million Americans may have type 1 diabetes. Each year, more than 15,000 children and 15,000 adults – approximately 80 people per day – are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in the U.S. JDRF is the worldwide leader in funding research to cure type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease that strikes children and adults suddenly and lasts a lifetime” (www.jdrf.org).
Businesses interested in pledging donations for the event may contact high school student council adviser Tom August at 842-6840 or email@example.com.
