Nine students at DeForest Area High School are currently enrolled in a course called “Nursing Assistant.” The course is taught by an instructor from Madison College. When students complete the coursework and laboratory practice, they will be placed in a hospital or nursing home for actual clinical experience. When the training is complete, the students can then choose to take the national exam. With passing scores, they become Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA).
The demand for workers in health care fields is growing. Experiences such as this help high school students clarify career goals. Most college Registered Nursing programs require students to have a CNA certification before entry. These students are all interested in some sort of health career – this course will take them one step closer to that goal.
