The “Playing for Time” one-act team swept the awards at the Wisconsin High School Theatre Festival held at Waunakee High School Saturday, November 23 and Sunday, November 24.

Competition began in October with 98 schools.  Forty made it through the district and sectional contests, which enabled them to compete at the state level.  On Sunday, DeForest Area High School students, under the direction of high school English teacher Janis Williams, were awarded the top honor of Critic’s Choice.  Anna Barton and Hannah Sultze earned Best Actor awards for their portrayals of  Fania Fenelon and Maryann – concentration camp prisoners.  Jan Williams also won a directing award. Under the direction of DASD Tech Director Brett Price, a team of students – Cole Hamilton, Makayla Stapelmann, Stephen Hutton-Okpalaeke, Katie Iverson, Taylor Johnson, Jay Dunn, and Nina Gundeck — earned 3rd place in the Tech Olympics competition.  Cole Hamilton earned an individual first place award in both the ‘Aiming Lights’ and ‘Setting Up Sound’ competitions.

Thirty-seven students from DeForest went to the two-day festival: attending workshops, viewing other plays, visiting with colleges, as well as, competing.
