Einerson to be honored at Badger Challenge

DeForest Area High School will  host of the 5th Annual Boys Basketball Badger Challenge on January 24 and 25.  Games are scheduled at 6:00 and 7:45 on Friday night and five games running consecutively beginning at noon on Saturday; concluding with the Championship game scheduled for 7:00 Saturday evening.  A $5.00 admission will be charged on both Friday and Saturday.

This year’s Badger Challenge Honoree will be former DeForest Area High School Principal Gary Einerson.  Gary will be honored with a short presentation prior to the Championship Game on Saturday night.  Mr. Einerson was the Principal of DeForest Area High School for 26 years before his retirement in 1996.

Mr. Einerson lettered in three sports for three years as a student-athlete at Mt. Horeb High School.  He then played basketball for legendary basketball coach John Barth at UW-Platteville.  Following a five-year stint as a teacher and coach at TwoRivers and Beloit, Mr. Einerson became a Principal at Gale-Ettrick in Wisconsin and Woodstock, Illinois before starting his career at DeForest Area High School.

Mr. Einerson served on the WIAA Advisory Council for 10 years and was President from 1980-81.  He also served on the WIAA Board of Control for six years and was President from 1987-88.  Mr. Einerson was heavily involved in conference realignment and the advancement of women’s sports in Wisconsin.  He also served as president of three different conferences, including two terms in the Badger Conference.  Mr. Einerson also served as President of the John Barth Foundation for the past 25 years.  In this role he worked with the UW-Platteville Foundation to provide financial aid to future and present students at UW-P.  The Foundation has provided over $200,000 in scholarships through the years.
