DeForest Area High School senior, Rebecca Gasper, has recently been selected as a recipient of the 2015 Herb Kohl Foundation award. The $3,000.00 awards have been made to 163 graduating high school students in Wisconsin.
According to the Herb Kohl Foundational Program website, “The purpose of the scholarship program is to recognize student leadership, citizenship, school and community involvement, and academic achievement.”
Recipients are selected by a statewide committee composed of civic leaders, and representatives of education-related associations and the program’s co-sponsors: The Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation, Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, Wisconsin Council of Religious and Independent Schools (WCRIS), and regional Cooperative Educational Service Agencies (CESA).
The Kohl Foundation Scholarship and Fellowship program was established by Herb Kohl, U.S. Senator (Retired) in 1990 and in recognition of the foundation’s 25th anniversary, Herb Kohl has increased awards to each scholar to $3000. Previously each award recipient received $1000. To date the foundation has awarded $9 million to Wisconsin educators, students and schools. “Education is the key to the future of Wisconsin and our nation. I am very proud of the accomplishments of these students and teachers, and look forward to the great contributions they will make in the future”, Kohl said.
The award was presented to Gasper at a recognition luncheon held at Monona Grove High School on Sunday, April 19th. Herb Kohl attended all luncheons to present awards to the recipients.
