Update – October 23, 2015: Great Lakes Great Apple Crunch Day was a success at DeForest Area School District! Students and staff were excited to crunch into their McIntosh apples from Lapacek’s Orchard to celebrate National Food Day and our collaboration with the farm to school program.
The DeForest Area School District will be joining schools across the Great Lakes region states of Minnesota, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana and Ohio in celebrating Great Lakes Great Apple Crunch Day. On October 22 students, during their lunch period, will be offered an apple supplied by local and regional orchards. Students in the district will be crunching into MacIntosh apples from Lapacek’s Orchard located in Poynette, Wisconsin. Lapacek’s Orchard produces over 60 apple varieties and maintains about 4,000 trees. The district’s foodservice program also serves Lapecek’s apples at the high school throughout the season.
The event coincides with National Farm to School Month and National Food Day. For more information about National Farm to School Month, visit http://www.farmtoschool.org.
