The DeForest Area Chamber of Commerce Education Committee presented two awards at the Chamber’s annual dinner, held on January 20 at the North Star Conference Center.
Debbie Brewster presented the Business Friend of Education award to Tony Armstrong, of Midwest Professional Karate, for his cooperative efforts with our school district, helping to ensure that students are well prepared for the workplace and citizenship. Brewster specifically thanked Tony on behalf of the teachers who work with him throughout the school year. Tony is an active participate of the district’s Adopt-a-Class program, sponsoring a classroom in each elementary school. He also provides support in elementary school physical education classes, teaching basic karate skills, while emphasizing strong character attributes.
The Education Committee also recognized Gwen Boettcher as the 2015 Educator Friend of Business. Boettcher was chosen for this recognition as someone who has partnered with businesses to provide quality educational experiences for students. An agri-science teacher at DeForest Area High School for the past 11 years, Boettcher creates opportunities for students to apply their classroom learning to hands-on, real life situations. She works with several local and regional businesses, and in the community, providing students with field trips, class labs, speakers, tours, and more.
