Three students from DeForest Area High School were selected to participate in the UW-Milwuakee Peck School of the Arts Vocal Festival. Haven Olson, Sarah Wanek, and Rachel Williams attended the festival on February 5 and 6 in Milwaukee with their high school choral music teacher, Maggie Condon.
According to Condon, the three students rehearsed Friday and Saturday with the UW-Milwaukee Honor Choir, and performed with the Choir in a concert held Saturday evening at the Helene Zelazo Center for the Arts.
Each student also worked on a prepared classical solo with one of the UW-Milwaukee voice faculty in a masterclass or mini-lesson setting. Haven Olson was one of few outstanding high school students to perform as an alto soloist on one of the concert pieces, Regina Coeli by Mozart.
According to their website, “the UW-M Vocal Festival provides an opportunity for talented high school singers to interact with, perform for, and join their voices with peers from around the region. Participating students have the chance to learn and grow as both soloists and choral artists.”
Condon, who graduated from UW-Milwaukee, was excited to see her students work with the professors that helped shape her as a musician and a teacher. “These girls worked very hard, and this is quite an honor for them to participate in this event,” said Condon.
