Ben Mikaelsen, a national author of 10 published chapter books, including Petey and Touching Spirit Bear, visited DeForest Area Middle School on Monday, March 7. He met with 7th and 8th grade students to share messages from his books that are based on his personal experiences while growing up. He speaks to the topic of bullying, struggling with learning to read (he didn’t learn to read until the 4th grade), and second language learners (born in Bolivia, South American, his first language was Spanish).
Mikaelsen’s most popular book, Touching Spirit Bear, is what he calls his “emotional” autobiography. Characters represent various times of his life.
His newest book, Jungle of Bones, has seen great success already, with a message about valuing our military and Veterans. The book is about a young boy discovering patriotism while helping his uncle search for a B-17 Bomber that his grandfather crashed during World War II in the jungles of Papua, New Guinea.
