Yahara Elementary School kicked off their spring Read-a-Thon program on Friday, April 8 with an all-school assembly that included a visit from Maynard from the Madison Mallards baseball team. According to reading specialist Kathy Williams, this year’s theme is “Y.E.S., We are Homerun Readers.” “The PTO generously provided every student with a new book of their choice to get started,” said Williams.
To track and promote the reading program, students will write titles of the books they read on baseballs, which will be displayed throughout the school between now and the end of the school year.
Williams said that students are also doing some fundraising between now and the end of the school year to support two school-wide projects. One is to purchase books for the summer reading program so that all students will be given several new books of their choice to enjoy over the summer, in addition to a book for a family read aloud. Secondly, funds will be used to purchase new playground equipment that is accessible for all students. Students are collecting donations from family and friends, and the PTO has set up an online donation page for Yes We Are Homerun Readers.
The Madison Mallards baseball team is providing two free game tickets for every student who reads during the Read-A-Thon. Additional tickets can be purchased at a discounted rate. The Mallards are also supporting the students’ efforts with additional Mallard-related prizes.
