DAHS Choir to perform at Carnegie Hall

img_4626How do you get to Carnegie Hall, you ask? Well, if you talk to the students of the DeForest Area High School Choir they will tell you, “Practice, practice, practice.” Which is exactly what they are doing in preparation of their upcoming trip to New York City to participate in a mass youth choir that will perform at one of the World’s most renowned concert halls, Carnegie Hall.
The great Carnegie Hall represents an elite level of achievement in music. The illustrious history of this great hall demands that only the highest standards be applied to all performers who take the stage.
According to Choir Director Maggie Condon, DeForest choirs participated in a competition in Chicago last spring in which their Bella Voce choir won the women’s division. This earned the group an invitation to perform as part of the exclusive festival in NYC.
Condon is excited for her students to have this opportunity. “To perform at Carnegie Hall is every musicians dream, and as a teacher to give my students this opportunity is really amazing. They definitely have their work cut out for them though. It is a heavy program.  Two of the pieces I actually performed with my advanced college choir when I was an undergrad student, so they are being pushed musically to a level we seldom get to achieve in the high school classroom. It is awesome to see them excited about this and working hard to rise to the challenge.”
Thirty students from DeForest Area High School will be performing as part of the National Youth choir. They will leave Thursday, March 23rd and return March 28th. While they have a pretty rigorous rehearsal schedule while in New York in preparation of their Sunday evening performance at Carnegie Hall, they will have some time to explore the city as well. “This is my first trip to New York City, so I am really excited to experience the sights and culture with my friends”, said Junior Isabella Oehme, “and I’m really happy we are able to see two Broadway shows while we are there too!”
Choir students will host a breakfast this Saturday to raise funds
The Choral department has been working on fundraising to help lower the cost of the trip and provide additional meals while in New York. They are hosting a Pancake Breakfast this Saturday from 8-10 am at Applebee’s East. Tickets are $8. For more information or to purchase tickets, please contact Maggie Condon at 608-842-6821.
