On Thursday, February 16, Rayne Loucks and Sam Neuman, sophomores at DeForest Area High School, competed against 20 other Dane County teams in the Junior Achievement Titan Business Challenge, held at American Family Insurance headquarters in Madison.
The JA Business Challenge is a competitive and exciting learning experience that challenges participants to apply their management skills and knowledge of economics. Through a simulation, teams manage a company and compete against one another as they manufacture and market a product.
Each team developed strategies for price, production, capital investment, marketing and research. At the end of the competition, Rayne and Sam’s Performance Index was the highest, securing them first place. They were awarded a $500 post-secondary education scholarship and an invitation to compete at the state competition in May.
“The experience was great and I am glad I had the opportunity to participate. We got close to bankruptcy a few times, but quick wit saved the company. The $500 dollars will help me with college textbooks”, said Rayne. And Sam stated “In today’s ever changing market, it is good to be up to date with technology. Plus, winning the scholarship is nice.”
Tim Anthon, Account Manager with Schultz Insurance, volunteers his time each semester to work with DeForest students, exposing them to real world business applications. Tim also acted as “Game Master” at the Dane County Challenge.
