DeForest Band & Choir to honor Capt. Cory Barr with Dedication Concert

The DeForest Area High School Band & Choir will come together on May 2nd to honor Capt. Cory Barr, the firefighter who lost his life in The Barr House explosion in downtown Sun Prairie. His wife, Abby Barr, will be in attendance. “I’ve known Abby for about 18 years. We went to college together and have remained in touch off and on over the years since,” says band director Brandon Bautz. “I wanted to do something nice for Abby and honor her husband and his sacrifice. I also wanted to provide the students with a valuable learning opportunity and that you can find strength through community.”

IMG_2953.jpgStudents at DeForest Area High School had the opportunity to meet Abby Barr when she recently visited their classroom to talk about her husband. She shared stories of what type of person her husband was, along with taking questions from the students. “She mentioned that Cory was living the dream. He was a firefighter, worked in real estate, had twin girls, and owned a bar. He led a full life and was living the dream every day. I think it is important to take note so we do not take life for granted. We should all appreciate the little things because life is short,” says Bautz.

The concert will be held at the DeForest Area High School Performing Arts Center on Thursday, May 2 at 7 pm.  Band & Choir students will be performing the piece “Hymn to the Fallen” in honor of Capt. Barr. The concert is free and open to the public.

According to Bautz, invitations were also sent to DeForest and Sun Prairie Fire and Police Departments. “We will have police and firefighters in attendance at this concert. I think it’s a great way to honor those who serve and to take time to thank them from the bottom of our hearts,” says Bautz.
