For the past two weeks, band students at DeForest Area Middle School have been hard at work preparing and performing. Beginning band students started with learning how to open their case the first day to performing Hot Cross Buns at a concert after those two weeks.
Six highly qualified teachers were hired to help instruct students for the Beginning Band Camp. These are the instructors and the instruments they taught: Melissa Ludois (flutes), Anne McAninch (clarinets), Charis Boresma (saxophones), Douglas Hoeft (trumpets), Jason Marshall (low brass), and Matthew Endres (percussionists). Brandon Bautz, DAHS Director of Bands, also coordinated the camp this year and provided support to all the teachers, parents/guardians, and students. “It’s always amazing to see the level of progress in a short time from these young musicians,” says Bautz. “I am very excited for the future and to work with my new colleague, Doug Hoeft.”
Bautz also stated that this camp wouldn’t have been as successful if he didn’t have high school band members helping and assisting all of the teachers. “They have been wonderful this summer and have given up their time to help make sure the beginning band students have a solid start. That and they also take care of the heavy lifting and moving equipment,” says Bautz. The high school assistants included Kira Stark, Molly Costello, Clare O’Connell, Hannah Lewis, Elizabeth Horner, Claire Lefeber, Austin Wink, Garrett Wink, Christopher Turba, Libby Powell, Annie Manzi, Alanna Crews, Mason Kuluvar, Gabe Finely, and Matthew Meinholz.
The concert on Friday, August 16th had the entire beginning band demonstrating what they learned, and each teacher led a group of instruments in a mini showcase.
In addition to the Beginning Band Camp, Hoeft and Bautz also conducted a 7/8 Summer Band and Summer Jazz Band. The Summer Band rehearsed music for their concert and kept students playing so they are ready for the upcoming school year. The Jazz Band got started on basics, including jazz styles, history, and how to play jazz. They also prepared music for their upcoming concert which was also on Friday, August 16th after the beginning band concert.
Both concerts were streamed on Facebook Live. To watch, search for the DeForest Area Music Boosters Facebook page and make sure to “Follow” the page to watch the concert. For more information, contact Bautz at email@example.com or Hoeft at firstname.lastname@example.org.
